There are five species of rhinos, two in Africa and the rest in Asia. The two African rhinos are called the White Rhinoceros and the Black Rhinoceros. However, both are more greyish or brownish in colour. Actually, the term "White" is probably a misunderstanding of the Africaan word "weit" or "wijd" meaning "broad", which refers to the shape of the upper lip. By contrast, the Black Rhino has a long pointed lip.

The rhino is seriously endangered by poaching. According to our chauffeur Japhet there are 21 black rhinos (Diceros bicornis) living in the Ngorongoro Crater.
